Marinara Sauce:
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 small onion, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
2 garlic cloves, crushed with garlic press
1 can (28 ounces) whole tomatoes in juice
2 tablespoons tomato paste
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil or parsley
1 package (16 ounces) spaghetti or other favorite pasta
Prepare Marinara Sauce: In a 4-quart saucepan, heat oil over medium heat until hot. Add onion and cook until tender, stirring occasionally. Stir in garlic and cook 1 minute. Stir in tomatoes with their juice, tomato paste, salt, and pepper, heat to boiling over high heat, stirring to break up tomatoes. Reduce heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally, 15 minutes. Stir in basil. While sauce is simmering, prepare pasta in boiling salted water as label directs. Drain. To serve, in large bowl, toss hot pasta with sauce.
